Brief Professional Biography

John Tiedemann is the Assistant Dean in the Monmouth University School of Science and the Director of the University’s Marine and Environmental Biology and Policy Program.

Mr. Tiedemann holds a B.S. in Physics and Planetary Science from Upsala College and an M.S. in Oceanography from the Florida Institute of Technology and has been professionally employed in the marine environmental field since 1979.

He has designed and conducted studies on a variety of topics of importance in the New Jersey coastal region, including:

  • Characterization and assessment of living marine resources in estuaries and nearshore waters
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of habitat restoration and enhancement techniques in estuarine and nearshore ecosystems
  • The occurrence of nuisance algal blooms in New Jersey coastal waters
  • The occurrence of shell disease in commercially valuable shellfish resources of the New York Bight
  • Assessments of nonpoint sources of pollution and pathogen contamination in New Jersey coastal watersheds
  • Best management practices to control vessel-generated wastes
  • Best practices for catch-and-release in marine recreational fisheries

Mr. Tiedemann has also designed and conducted a variety of educational programs dealing with marine and environmental issues, including college courses and teacher training programs.

Prior to joining the faculty at Monmouth University, Mr. Tiedemann was the Director of Education and Special Projects for the New Jersey Sea Grant College Program. Mr. Tiedemann also worked as a Senior Scientist with Coastal Environmental Services, an ecologically oriented consulting firm, where he specialized in the evaluation of environmental considerations associated with waterfront development. Prior to that, he was the New Jersey Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service specialist in marine recreation and coastal water quality and the marine pollution specialist for the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium. In 1984, Mr. Tiedemann was a Chief Scientist during the federally sponsored Westway Fisheries Striped Bass Study.

Mr. Tiedemann began his career as a consultant providing technical support to U.S. EPA Region 2 and later working in the Marine and Wetland Protection Branch of EPA Region 2. His responsibilities included technical review of applications and support documents related to hazardous waste disposal under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and ocean dumping of industrial wastes, sewage sludge, and at-sea incineration in the New York Bight region under the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act.
