agree with, and use, most of the suggestions given when I interview candidates
(and students trying to get me to waive 509 for them), but the suggestion that
programming is an exercise in using wizz-bang IDS features is particularly
stupid. Also, the first page is a good explanation of why I teach 509 the way
I do.
The other thing to keep in mind is that a job interview is a two-way street:
they're finding out about you, but you should also be finding out about them at
the same time. A company that asks you these kinds of questions may well be a
company that cares about programming and keeping their programmers happy. On
the other hand, it could also be a company that's reading from a script; the
quality of the discussion you have with the interviewer should help you figure
out which is true.
