According to the
U.S. Post Office, it handled 170 billion pieces of mail in 2010. Assuming
that’s a yearly, uniformly distributed volume, it corresponds to around
170/365 = 0.466 billion pieces a day. That daily volume is distributed
unevenly around the country and not observed in one place, but you should get
the general idea: it’s important to be able to route lots of mail
quickly, correctly, and cheaply.
