The sustained throughput on a disk is about 50 mbytes/sec, being optimistic and not looking too closely at the measurements. RAM can deliver a byte every 2 nsec (being less optimistic than with disk but still not looking too closely at the measurements), which is a sustained rate of 500 mbytes/sec.
