I am taking your 509 course and I do not have a computer at home; the
university provides my only access to computers. I work on campus from 8 to
5:30 (except for class days when I work to 4); the only time i get to work on
the assignment is the couple of hours after work and class. The computing
labs are closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, which is when I have the
most free time. Can you please do something so that the labs can be kept
open during the weekends at, least for half the day?
This is a problem that comes up every once and a while, and it turns out to be
difficult to solve. There are a number of factors that work against scheduling
more open lab hours; providing security for students and equipment is one, but
there are others (this is particularly true during the summer when they expect
the buildings to be empty and in less need of attention). I'll look into
getting the labs open during the weekend, but I wouldn't bet too heavily on
success.
As an aside, not that it will help you any, the department is aware of the
problem and is working with the University to provide a 24/7 computer lab.
Finally, you might want to think about buying yourself a computer. You are,
after all, a computer-science major in a department that requires lots of
programming. $200 buys you a pretty good used desktop system or an
o.k. laptop. Of course, you're going to be running in 32-64 meg at 2-300 Mhz
with 1-3 gig, and you'll have to run linux, but you'll have something you can
use to compute with (and if you get a laptop, you can avoid ISPs by getting a
network card and plugging into the campus network).
