A new toy.

I've had installed a FAQ-O-Matic to help support project communication. A
FAQ-O-Matic (or FOM) is a web-based discussion tool similar to those found in,
for example, slashdot and various web logs.

For the moment, you have to be within the Monmouth domain to access the FOM
page (this can be changed if desirable). You can view the pages at any time;
you have to log-in to modify the pages. Log-in requires an e-mail address,
which must be your Monmouth e-mail address, and a password. Do not use an
important password, passwords are not stored securely; make up some stupid
password. Log-ins also expire after an hour; you may find you are required to
re-log-in if you have a long-standing connection to the FOM. You will be asked
to log in only when you attempt to modify FOM pages.

Once at the FOM main page, you'll see something that looks like this:

  Extreme Programming

  Subcategories:
     Practice page
     Project 2
     Project 3

  Answers in this category:

[Add a New Answer in "Extreme Programming"]

The main topic of the page appears first (Extreme Programming in this case).
Next comes subcategories, of which the two most important ones are Practice
page and Project 3. If you click on "practice page" you'll see something like
this:

  Extreme Programming :
  Practice page

This is a scribble page you can use to practice your fac-o-matic skills.
  rclayton@monmouth.edu

  Subcategories:

  Answers in this category:
   bobs info
   blah blah blah
   My new question.

[Add a New Answer in "Practice page"]

The topic for this page is "Extreme Programming : Practice page". Next comes a
brief description of the topic, written by me. Following that are a list of
subcategories for this topic; there are no subcategories for "Extreme
Programming: Practice page", so the list is empty. Despite what the heading
says, next comes a list of questions on this topic. If you click on "blah blah
blah" you'll see something like

Extreme Programming : Practice page :
    blah blah blah

    blab blab blab
    rclayton@monmouth.edu

    [Append to This Answer]

  Previous: bobs info
      Next: My new question.

The topic for this page is "Extreme Programming : Practice page : blah blah
blah". The question, written by me follows. After the question come the
answers; in this case there aren't any answers. Clicking on the previous link
("bobs info") takes you to the previous question for the topic "Extreme
Programming : Practice page"; clicking on the next link ("My new question")
takes you to the next question for the topic "Extreme Programming : Practice
page". Clicking on "Append to This Answer" lets you add an answer (or ask a
follow-up question); at this point you'll be asked to log-in if you aren't
already:

Text parts can only be added by someone who has proven their identification.

If you have never established a password to use with FAQ-O-Matic, you can
    [Create a New Login].

If you have forgotten your password, you can [Set a New Password].

If you have already logged in earlier today, it may be that the token I
use to identify you has expired.

    Please log in again.

Again, use you monmouth university e-mail address and a stupid password to log
in, after which you'll see

Enter new text for blah blah blah

  big text box

                                Submit Changes Revert
  Hide Attributions

  Format text as:
    Natural text
    Monospaced text (code, tables)
    Untranslated HTML

If you later need to edit or delete this text, use the [Appearance] page to
turn on the expert editing commands.

  [Return to FAQ]

Your answer goes in the big text box; the answer should be in plain old text.
Clicking on "Revert" clears the text box; clicking on "Return to FAQ" cancels
the answer and takes you back to the "blah blah blah" answer page; clicking on
"Submit Changes" enters your answer to the list of answers on the "blah blah
blah" answer page. In either case, you'll end up back at the "blah blah blah"
answer page. Click on the "Practice page" link at the top of the page to
return to the "Practice page" topic page:

  Extreme Programming :
  Practice page

This is a scribble page you can use to practice your fac-o-matic skills.
  rclayton@monmouth.edu

  Subcategories:

  Answers in this category:
   bobs info
   blah blah blah
   My new question.

[Add a New Answer in "Practice page"]

To add a new question to the list of questions on this topic, click on the "Add
a New Answer in "Practice page"" link (again, the label is misleading because
you're using it to ask a new question). You should see a page like this:

  New Answer

  Title:
    New Item

Show attributions from all parts together at bottom

  Submit Changes Revert

  [Return to FAQ]

Replace "New Item" with a brief, one line description of your question ("bobs
question", for example); this description will appear in the list of questions
for Practice page topic. As with answering a question, clicking on "Revert"
returns the Title text box to its original state ("New Item"); clicking on
"Return to FAQ" cancels the new question, and clicking on "Submit Changes"
takes you to a page that looks pretty much like the question-answering page:

Enter the answer to A new question

  big text box

                                Submit Changes Revert
  Hide Attributions

  Format text as:
    Natural text
    Monospaced text (code, tables)
    Untranslated HTML

If you later need to edit or delete this text, use the [Appearance] page to
turn on the expert editing commands.

  [Return to FAQ]

Your plain-text question goes in the text box. Button behavior is the same as
for the answer page: "Revert" clears the text box; "Return to FAQ" cancels the
question (but not, unfortunately, your brief description of the question), and
"Submit Changes" creates a topic page for your question.

There are some other things you can do with the FOM, but this should be enough
to get you started. The class FOM url is

  http://cslab00.monmouth.edu:8080/cgi-bin/fom

You can also find a link in the "Home Page" section of the class home page.
