A make test problem.

  When your turn-in software runs "make test" it fails because it can't
  rpc-gen. But when I run "make test" everything works fine. What's going on?

My turn-in script doesn't have . in the PATH; your path (I'm guessing) does
(type "echo $PATH" to see). Call rpc-gen with "./rpc-gen" (without the double
quotes) in the makefile.
