I've updated the checking code to provide a more through check and more
informative error messages. However, to do that I had to include a solution to
the problem in the checking code. It would be counterproductive to make the
solution source available; instead I've made the checking code available in
object form.

There are object versions for solaris and linux; the solaris version uses g++
and won't work with CC. If anybody wants a CC version, let me know.
