I have the impression that we can use any language to complete the projects.
Not any language; it has to run on solaris.
But from your assignment turn-in page, it seems we only can use C or C++.
That's because they seemed like the two most likely candidates.
I wonder if I can use another language such as perl or visual basic.
Not visual basic, because it doesn't run on solaris (or, if it does, I don't
have the time to install it). I don't know that much about perl, but I'm
disinclined to allow it for the first project because it may make things too
easy. There are benefits to going one-on-one with the sockets interface: you
have an understanding of what higher-level interfaces such as perl's are doing;
you have some idea of the features you can expect from a higher-level interface
such as perl's; and when things go wrong, or aren't working quite as well as
they should, you have some idea of what might be going on back there, in the
dark.
