We don't need to test an assortment of items, you just want us to get the
  idea behind testing correct?

That depends. There are an assortment of ideas I want you to get in this
section, such as the ideas of unit, integration, and system testing, as well as
the ideas of functional, structural, and object-oriented testing. If you can
demonstrate those ideas by testing one item, then I guess the answer is "yes".

On the other hand, if you understand these ideas, you may be wondering to
yourself if it's possible to perform system, integration, and unit testing on
the same item, in which case the answer seems more likely to be "no".

Also, one of the more useful rules in requirements analysis is to ask only one
question per sentence. There's at least two reasons why this rule is useful: a
sentence with one question is easier to understand than is a sentence with more
than one question, and it's much easer understanding the answer to a sentence
with one question than it is understanding the answer to a sentence with more
than one question.
