I feel a little overwhelmed after looking at the CMMS Software Requirements
Document.
I listed that as an example of a (not particularly good) real-life SRD; I
certainly don't expect you to emulate it in your project (in fact, I've
explicitly indicated I don't want you turning in something as bulky and
voluminous as the CMMS SRD).
Should I start with the analysis part or do I just begin expanding on each
topic in the template?
To my way of thinking, those two questions are the same. By expanding each
topic on the template, you are starting the analysis. Once you have the
template filled in, you can examine your SRD to determine if it's good enough
or if it needs more work. You can do that by using the checklist, or by having
each other member of your group examine the SRD from the view point of their
role in the project (I realize most group members won't have much experience in
their project role, but it's valuable to develop the skills that allow you to
operate under such conditions), or by some other method of your choosing.
On the template you stated that details marked with an asterisk (*) are less
important. Do you mean don't do them entirely or just don't go crazy over
them?
You should pursue them only after you've got everything else in proper order;
for most people, that translates to "ignore them."
