CS618 will build upon some of the topics covered in CS520; in particular th=
ose related to machine learning. Everyone who completes CS520 this semester=
, will be given permission to take the course in the spring.

CS618: Data Mining
Spring Semester 2012
Instructor: Dr. Richard Scherl
HH316 Mondays and Thursdays 1:00 =96 2:50

Data mining is the automated extraction of patterns representing the knowle=
dge found in large collections of information such as databases, data wareh=
ouses, and the web. It involves machine-learning techniques from artificial=
intelligence, database technology, as well as other fields such as informa=
tion retrieval. The field includes both important theoretical results as we=
ll as practical tools. Data mining is widely used in industry, government,=
as well as in scientific (both natural and social) research. Today many e=
mployers are interested in hiring people who have a knowledge of data minin=
g.

The textbook for the course is:

Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques (3rd edition) by Jiawei Han and Michel=
ine Kamber. Morgan Kaufmann Publishers (Elsevier). 2011.

The text will be supplemented with a number of articles.

The course will focus on understanding the main data mining techniques and =
their applications. Data mining software will be used on a variety of data =
sets. This course will not be a programming course; rather the focus is on =
understanding the algorithms used by data mining software packages and how =
to use these on particular data sets, and understand the results. All the n=
eeded mathematical background will be covered in the course.

The prerequisites for the course are CS517 (Databases) and CS520 (Introduct=
ion to Intelligent Systems). CS533 (Database Architecture), although listed=
as a prerequisite, is not needed. Students, without CS533, can be regis=
tered by Ms. Roseanne Gunter. Students who have not taken one of CS517 or C=
S520 can speak to the instructor to see if they can be allowed to take the =
course.
