Software Engineering Department Graduate Admission Requirements

Revised: 22 November 1996

The Software Engineering program requires candidates to have earned an undergraduate degree in computer science, electronics engineering, or information science. Students should have a minimum overall GPA of 2.5/4.0, and a 3.0/4.0 GPA in their major. The GPA requirement can only be waived if the students is working at least part-time, and has been strongly recommended and endorsed by his/her employer.

Candidates whose undergraduate degree is not one of the above, but have demonstrable experience in software development can also be admitted to the program. However, such a student may be required to take additional courses in data structures, operating systems, and/or programming languages. The credits for these courses will not be credited toward the 36 credits required for the Master of Science in Software Engineering degree.

Depending on the applicant's undergraduate degree and work experience, GRE scores may be required. Ability to program in C++ or Ada is required to enable students to carry out laboratory assignments.

International students must provide proof of proficiency in English as a second language. This is normally done by taking the TOEFL examination and obtaining a score of 525 or higher. International students are also strongly advised to have their transcripts evaluated by World Education Services, P.O. Box 745, Old Chelsea Station, New York, NY 10113-0745, Phone 212/966-6311.
