Biographies

Mark Jay Zucker, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.A.C.P. has been the Director of the Cardiac Transplant Program at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center for the past seven years. Prior to that time Dr. Zucker was a full-time member of the faculty in the Division of Cardiology at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago. He was one of four physicians assigned to heart transplant program. In September 1989 he relocated to New Jersey and together with Dr. Fuzesi started the heart and later lung transplant programs. Dr. Zucker has had primary responsibility for the pre-operative evaluation, post-operative care, and immunosuppressive management of over 275 heart transplant recipients. As well, he has had first hand experience with approximately 12 Jarvik recipients, 28 Heartmate 1000 IP LVAD recipients, and 11 ECMO patients. Dr. Zucker is, or has been, the principal or co- investigator on more than a dozen investigational trials. He is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and is interested in clinical medicine, research and education. Finally, he has served on multiple state, regional, and national committees relating to thoracic organ transplantation.

Laszlo Fuzesi, M.D. is the Transplant Center's Surgical Director of Cardiothoracic Transplantation. He is board certified in surgery and thoracic surgery; and has performed close to 170 heart transplants since his arrival at the medical center in January 1990 after completing his transplant training at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in N.Y. Together with Dr's. Zucker and McDonough, Dr. Fuzesi has developed New Jersey's only lung transplantation and adult extracorporeal membrane oxygenation programs.

Dr. Fuzesi is a clinical assistant professor of surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, in Newark, and former Medical Director of the New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network, the state's organ procurement organization.

Makilzhan Shanmugam, M.D. recently joined the Cardiothoracic Transplantation Program at NBIMC. Dr. Shanmugam completed medical school at Madras Medical College, Madras, India. His residency in internal medicine and cardiology fellowship were both at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - New Jersey Medical School. He has authored manuscripts on alcoholic cardiomyopathy and diabetic cardiomyopathy. Dr. Shanmugam has taken an active interest in clinical trials as a co- investigator on a multi-national pharmacologic stress testing agent as well as the latest generation of echocardiographic contrast agents.
