BRUNELLI EARNS NORTHEAST CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University standout Danielle Brunelli was recognized as the Northeast Conference’s Women’s Tennis Player of the Week the league announced on Tuesday.
The Holmdel, N.J., native became the first Monmouth player to earn the honor, which the conference began awarding during the 2000-01 season.
Competing at the NJAIAW Championships at Drew University over the weekend, Brunelli went 4-0 to become the first player in Monmouth history to capture the “A” flight title. Brunelli, who entered the event as the No. 4 seed, opened the tournament with victories over Tracy Saladino of Montclair State, 10-5, and Abby Woodhead of Drew, 10-2. In the semifinals, Brunelli toppled No. 2 seed Sara Agonafer of Princeton, 6-3, 6-2. She went on to defeat Fairleigh Dickinson’s Marisa Puga , 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, to win the event.
The Hawks own a 7-3 overall record and a 5-0 mark in Northeast Conference action.
Monmouth returns to action this weekend as the Hawks travel to Rhode Island for matches vs. the University of Vermont and the University of Rhode Island.
