HAWKS WOMEN’S TENNIS CONTINUES TO ROLL WITH VICTORY OVER DREXEL

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University women’s tennis squad defeated Drexel University for the first time ever as the Hawks posted a 4-3 victory over the Dragons on Tuesday afternoon in Philadelphia.

Monmouth (8-3) clinched the victory in doubles action. With the match tied 3-3 after singles action, Monmouth’s Anneabeth Bailey and Jennifer Taylor registered an 8-3 victory over Lisa Septack and Samara Porter in No. 3 doubles action. With the Hawks’ Kelly Phoebus and Gina Fay trailing 7-4 in their No. 2 doubles match, teammates Danielle Brunelli and Lisa DePaolo clinched the match by closing the deal on their No. 1 doubles match, 8-6, to win the doubles’ point. Phoebus and Fay would eventually go on to win their match, 9-7 over Lynn Pigliacampi and Brandi Tricker.

In singles action, Monmouth jumped out to a 2-1 lead as three of the matches went just two sets. Fay defeated Pigliacampi, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Phoebus triumphed over Porter at No. 6 singles for the Hawks and Drexel’s Septack scored a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Lauren McCormick at No. 4 singles.

Drexel evened the score by winning two of the three singles matches that went three sets. The Dragons scored a pair of victories on the top of the card as Yolanda Duron bested Brunelli, 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Meryem Chaui defeated DePaolo, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Monmouth’s Bailey scored a 5-7, 6-4, 6-0 win over Tricker at No. 5 singles.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday as the Hawks travel to Kingston, R.I., for a neutral court match vs. the University of Vermont.
