HAWKS BLOW BY GAELS TO MOVE TO 6-2 ON THE SEASON

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.  – The Monmouth University women’s tennis squad recorded a 5-2 victory over Iona College Monday evening at the Pelham Country Club to move to 6-2 on the season.

Monmouth took control of the match early on as Lauren McCormick, Anneabeth Bailey and Kelly Phoebus all made quick work of their opponents in singles action. McCormick bested Erin Muldoon, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. Bailey triumphed over Lauren Canetti, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles and Phoebus toppled Liz Fitzmaurice, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.

Iona trimmed the lead to 3-2 with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The Gaels’ Tobe Conklin defeated Danielle Brunelli, 6-2, 6-4 in the top spot and Monmouth’s Lisa DePaolo had to withdraw from No. 2 singles action with a back injury, giving the victory to Iona’s Heather Brown. DePaolo won the opening set 6-3, but was trailing 4-1 when succumbing to the injury in the second set.

Monmouth clinched the match when Gina Fay recorded a three-set victory over Sue Leabo, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 3 singles.

Due to time constraints and the outcome of the match already having been decided only two of the doubles matches were played to completion. Brunelli and McCormick defeated Conklin and Brown, 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and Bailey and Jennifer Taylor downed Canetti and Louise Castellano, 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Monmouth returns to action on Tuesday as the Hawks travel to Brooklyn, N.Y., for a 3:30 p.m. contest at St. Francis College.
