MONMOUTH WOMEN’S TENNIS DEFEATS MOUNT ST. MARY’S

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University’s women’s tennis squad recorded a 6-1 victory over Mount St. Mary’s College Saturday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Md.

Monmouth (5-2) swept the doubles action to take a 1-0 lead early in the contest. Danielle Brunelli and Lisa DePaolo squeaked by Kelli Louis and Kris Pizzicka 9-8 at No. 1 doubles. Gina Fay and Kelly Phoebus blanked Elizabeth Nell and Heather Whetstone 8-0 at No. 2 doubles. Anneabeth Bailey and Jennifer Taylor recorded an 8-6 win over Julie Bockroth and Lauren McBride at No. 3 doubles.

The Hawks won all of the early results in singles action as Fay shutout Whetstone, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 3 position and Bailey topped Bockroth and Phoebus downed McBride by identical 6-1, 6-0 margins at the No. 5 and No. 6 level, respectively. Monmouth’s Lauren McCormick also recorded a two-set victory over Nell at No. 4 singles.

Two of the singles matches went three sets as Brunelli defeated Louis, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 at No. 1 singles and Mount St. Mary’s Pizzicka downed DePaolo at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6.

Monmouth returns to action on Monday as the Hawks travel to New York for a 3 p.m. match at Iona.
