MONMOUTH WOMEN’S TENNIS EVENS RECORD WITH VICTORY OVER RIDER

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University’s women’s tennis squad evened its record at 1-1 with a 4-3 victory over Rider University Wednesday afternoon in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Monmouth fell behind early as the Broncs won two-of-three doubles matches to stake a 1-0 lead. Monmouth’s Lauren McCormick and Jennifer Taylor teamed up to defeat Riders’ Amanda Smith and Patti Pollack 8-3 at No. 3 doubles for the Hawks’ lone doubles victory.

The Hawks evened the match at 1-1 as Kelly Phoebus recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ariana Iacona at No. 5 singles. Rider’s Kristen Zigo defeated Danielle Brunelli 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to give the Broncs a 2-1 edge. Monmouth overtook Rider and staked a 4-2 lead as the next three reported scores favored the Hawks. Gina Fay defeated Steph Petrasko 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, McCormick topped Smith 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Taylor triumphed over Brandi Plummer 6-0, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday as the Hawks travel to New Britain, Conn., for a 3 p.m. contest at Central Connecticut State University.
