SELLITTO'S GOAL LIFTS
MONMOUTH TO
1-0 VICTORY OVER UMBC
West Long Branch, NJ -- Freshman midfielder Tricia Sellitto (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) scored the game's lone goal at 52:07 lifting Monmouth (8-3-1/5-0) to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Northeast Conference rival UMBC (3-9/2-3) this afternoon. The win helped Monmouth remain unbeaten in conference play.
Sellitto's goal was set up by senior defender Allison Simpson (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea). Simpson lobbed a perfect cross from the right side of the penalty area that found Sellitto on the far side of the net. The freshman headed the ball from close range and Retrievers' goalkeeper Becky Hicock (Virginia Beach, VA/Princess Anne) got a hand on it but could not keep it from trickling over the line. It was Sellitto's second game-winning goal of the season.
The Retrievers, who have now dropped six straight games, had some scoring chances early on but could not get the ball past Monmouth 'keeper Kristin Spohn (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills). The junior tallied a game-high five saves en route to her seventh shutout of the season. Hicock recorded three saves for the visitors, which outshot Monmouth 9-5.
