HAWKS EDGE QUINNIPIAC, 2-1
Pachucki's Goal, Spohn's Save Keep MU Unbeaten
in NEC Play
West Long Branch, NJ -- Senior midfielder Lauren Pachucki's
(Warren, NJ/Watchung Hills) goal with just over three minutes remaining
in the first half proved to be the difference as Monmouth University (9-4-2,
6-0-1) edged Quinnipiac College (14-4, 7-2), 2-1 on the Great Lawn this
afternoon. The victory kept the Hawks unbeaten in Northeast Conference
play.
Pachucki snapped a 1-1 in the 43rd minute (2:57 left) with her third goal
of the season as she gathered a pass from Cheryl Wroblewski (Brick,
NJ/Brick) and fired a shot from the left side just under the crossbar past
a leaping Mary Kate Galusha (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill). Monmouth
had taken a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as Erin Bayley (Oakridge,
NJ/Gill St. Benard's) scored off a scramble in front for her second goal
of the season. However, Quinnipiac would tie the game just two minutes
later as Elisa Goncalves (South Windsor, CT/South Windsor) scored
her 16th goal of the season. Goncalves dribbled toward the end line before
turning and firing a shot from a near flat angle that banked off the right
post and into the net.
The second haf went scoreless as two of the nation's top defensive teams
(MU ranked 7th, QC ranked 10th) could not produce much offense. Quinnipiac
had one solid opportunity with just over three minutes remaining as Lisa
Horowitz (Huntington, NY/Walt Whitman) fired a shot from 12 yards out
that MU goalkeeper Kristin Spohn (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) was
able to punch away preserving the Monmouth victory.
Spohn made three saves with Galusha collected four on the day. Monmouth
outshot the Braves, 8-5.
