PALUMBO'S GOAL LIFTS MONMOUTH PAST MT. ST. MARY'S , 1-0
West Long Branch, NJ -- Freshman midfielder SHANNA PALUMBO (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) scored her first collegiate goal in the 89th minute as Monmouth University (7-3-1, 4-0 NEC) remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference play with a 1-0 victory over Mt. St. Mary's (1-11, 0-5 NEC) on MU's Great Lawn this afternoon. The win snapped the Hawks' two-game losing streak while the Mountaineers dropped their 10th consecutive contest.
Despite Monmouth's huge 24-4 advantage in shots, the game was scoreless
until the 89th minute as Palumbo collected a clearing pass and one-touched
the ball before firing a shot from 30 yards out into the upper right-hand
corner past Mountaineer goalkeeper KATIE KORROW (Cockeysville, MD/Mercy).
Each team had several chances throughout the game. In the first half, Mt. St. Mary's lone scoring opportunity was stopped by Hawks' goalkeper KRISTIN SPOHN (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) (one save), who posted her sixth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, KRISTEN KEMP (Reading, PA/Exter Township) and Korrow combined to keep Monmouth off the scoreboard. Kemp stopped eight shots before leaving the game in the 56th minute. Korrow collected four saves before allowing the winning goal.
Monmouth also had several opportunities hit the crossbar and post.
