HAWKS DEFEAT LIU IN DOUBLE OVERTIME IN WOMEN’S SOCCER

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Monmouth University’s women’s soccer squad traveled to Brooklyn, N.Y. this afternoon for an NEC showdown with Long Island University and came away with a 2-1 victory in double overtime.  The win improves Monmouth’s record to 9-4-1, and 6-2 in the Northeast Conference.

The two squads played to a scoreless first half, as LIU out shot the Hawks six to four in the stanza.

LIU knotted the score at one in the 73rd minute when Laura Brosious drilled a 20-yard shot past Monmouth goalkeepr Abby Shiffler (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin).  Brosious’ goal was assisted by Erica Anderson.

The score remained tied through regulation and the first overtime, as a total of three shots were attempted in the first period of extra time.

Forty-six seconds into the second overtime, Gina Greico (Wethersfield, Conn./Mercy) blasted a shot at the LIU net, which was knocked in by Amy Saltalamacchia (Neptune, N.J./Neptune), for the winning score.

Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, when they host the University of Pennsylvania in a 3 p.m. match on the Great Lawn.  The contest is the final home game for the Hawks this season.
