SELLITTO GOAL IN OT PROPELS MONMOUTH TO WIN
West Long Branch, N.J. – Tricia Sellitto (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) headed in a cross from Christine Breiner (Wall, N.J./Wall) with just over two minutes remaining in the second overtime to propel Monmouth (5-2-1, 2-1 NEC) to a 1-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2-7, 1-5 NEC) in women’s soccer action on Friday afternoon, on the Great Lawn.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through regulation with minimal scoring chances until late in the second half. At 54:25, Alisa Gilmartin (Old Bridge, N.J./St. John Vianney) pounded a long shot that slammed off the crossbar. Five minutes later, FDU had its best chance as Miranda Mignano (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) headed a corner kick that Monmouth goalie Abby Shiffler (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) had to save with her fingertips.
The Hawks, who outshot the Knights 27-6 on the afternoon, capatilized on four consecutive corner kicks in the second overtime. On the fourth service, the ball was cleared out of the box, back to Breiner, who volleyed the ball to Sellitto for the winning score.
FDU’s netminder, Megan McDonnell (Richmond Hill, N.Y./Cardozo) was tested by the Monmouth offense, but made nine saves in the match, including a doorstep save on a Kaci Redding (Metuchen, N.J./Metuchen) shot five minutes into the first overtime.
Monmouth returns to action on October 19, when they face Quinnipiac
University in a 3:30 p.m. match.
