WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — Monmouth
University posted its biggest first-half scoring output of the season to
build a 52-26 lead and the
Hawks coasted to an 89-58 victory
over St. Francis (N.Y.) College in Northeast Conference basketball action
Monday evening at Boylan Gym.
With the Hawks leading 31-20 with
9:04 left in the half, Monmouth went on a 21-6 run to go into the locker
room with a hefty 26-point lead. The
Hawks, who shot 60.0 percent (18-of-30)
from the field in the opening act, had four players head into the intermission
with double-digits in
the scoring column, including Jewonda
Bright (Norfolk, Va./Norview HS) with 12 points, Courtney Lumpkin
(Newark, N.J./West Side HS) with 11
points and Michelle Cappadona
(Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Red Bank Catholic HS) and Rashawnah French
(Newark, N.J./West Side HS) with 10
points apiece.
Monmouth kept the pressure on in
the second half as the Hawks went on a 19-7 run to begin the stanza. The
Blue and White posted its biggest lead
of the contest at 80-40 with 9:21
remaining in the half. The Terriers were able to clip the lead to 29 points,
but Monmouth held St. Francis
at bay, by knocking down 13-of-25
(52.0 percent) from the field in the second half.
Bright was the game’s leading scorer
with 17 points. Cappadona posted one of her finest all-around performances
of the season as she amassed
16 points and four rebounds to
go with game-highs in assists (eight) and steals (five). French ended the
contest with 14 points and seven
rebounds. Lumpkin contributed 16
points, including a 10-of-11 performance from the free throw line.
The Terriers were led by Kia
Nealy (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) with 13 points. Kim Weir
(Dollard des Ormeaux, Quebec/Vanier College)
added 11 points and a game-high
eight rebounds. Colleen Carbone (Nashua, N.H./Nashua HS) notched
nine points.
Monmouth’s hawking defense cause
34 Terrier turnovers and held St. Francis to a paltry 31.7 percent (19-of-60)
shooting from the field. St.
Francis outrebounded Monmouth,
41-39, including a grabbing 20 boards on the offensive glass. Monmouth
logged eight blocks in the contest,
including two each by Bright and
Bridgette Bynum (Philadelphia, Pa./Girard College HS).
The game was unable to pick up any
flow as whistles were blown with great frequency. The contest featured
43 total fouls, the most in a
Monmouth game this season, to go
along with numerous traveling and double dribble violations.
Action was delayed for about 15
minutes with 6:17 remaining in the contest as Monmouth reserve Katie
Turpin (Underhill, Vt./Mount Mansfield
Union) went down with an
injury. Early indications are that is a fractured fibula and tibia.
Monmouth returns to action on Saturday,
January 19 as the Hawks host Quinnipiac University in a 3 p.m. contest
at Boylan Gym.
