WINES HELPS MONMOUTH TIE PENNSYLVANIA, 2-2
West Long Branch, NJ -- Junior forward Kelly Wines (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) scored the second of her two goals with just 4:45 remaining in the second half helping Monmouth (2-1-1) salvage a 2-2 tie against visiting Pennsylvania (1-1-1) this afternoon.
The Quakers took a 1-0 lead just 7:16 into the contest as senior forward Jill Callaghan (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) converted a penalty kick. Callaghan, who was pulled down in the penalty box, beat Monmouth goalkeeper Kristin Spohn (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany Hills) to the far post. The Hawks tied it just 4:43 later as Wines tallied her first goal on a pretty head ball from eight yards. Sophomore Lauren Tabolinsky (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) set up the goal with a shot chip pass from the right side of the penalty box.
Penn scored its final goal with just :54 remaining in the first half as midfielder Sabrina Fenton (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) took a pass from linemate Kellianne Toland (Philadelphia, PA/Nazareth Academy) and found the back of the net from 15 yards. It was Fenton's first goal of the season.
Wines' equalizer came off a corner kick from senior Allison Simpson (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea). The low line drive was tipped in the box and somehow found its way to Wines who was waiting near the far post.
Penn got the better of the play in the overtime, but could not solve Spohn, who just seemed to get better as the game progressed. The Quakers had their best chance with 1:30 remaining in the second overtime as Callaghan drilled a shot from the top of the penalty box that was deflected over the crossbar by Spohn.
Spohn helped keep Monmouth in the game with a season-high 13 saves.
