MONMOUTH MEN’S TENNIS WINS THIRD IN A ROW
Hawks down Rider, 6-1.
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University’s men’s tennis squad won its third consecutive match as the Hawks defeated Rider, 6-1, at the MU Tennis Complex.
Monmouth (8-7) started the match by winning the doubles’ point, taking two of three matches. Nick Dargene and Andrew Katz defeated John Phillips and Chris Ulmer, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. Chad Long and Stephen Barlow were triumphant at No. 2 doubles, defeating Frank Ruggiero and Tim Koch, 8-3.
Monmouth won the match as they took control of the singles action early on. Long defeated Phillips, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, Katz toppled Doug Kreszl, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 4 singles and Chris Doyle defeated Ryan Sonnabend, 6-4, 6-4 to give the Hawks a 4-0 edge.
The squads split the next two contests as Rider’s Neil McConnell defeated Mike Miller, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles and Dargene bested Ruggiero, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. The last result reported was Monmouth’s Ali Gilak winning a three-set match from Koch, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, April 11 as the Hawks host Quinnipiac in a 3 p.m. match at the MU Tennis Complex.
