HAWKS TRIUMPH IN DOUBLE OT OVER TERRIERS

Maspeth, N.Y. - J.D. Scaggs (Olney, Md./Sherwood) scored on a shot from 40 yards away at the 113:20 mark to give the Monmouth University Hawks (4-12-1, 2-6-1 Northeast Conference) a 2-1 double-overtime victory over the St. Francis College (New York) Terriers (4-9-1, 3-5) in a Northeast Conference men’s soccer match at the Metropolitan Oval.

Scaggs collected a loose ball and powered it past St. Francis goalkeeper Waldo Diaz.

Monmouth had carried a 1-0 lead into the late stages of the match, but in the 86th minute, Alberth Kolenovic’s cross from the right side was headed back into the goal area by Damier Walker, and Joseph Afful headed the ball into the goal past Hawks’ keeper Mike Erskine (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) to knot the match at 1-1.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the 36th minute off a corner kick.  Frank Loconte’s (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge) corner kick went to Mike Hull (Pine Beach,N.J./Monsignor Donovan), who headed the ball to Anthony Viscariello (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton Prep).  Viscariello scored with a well-placed right-footed shot to put Monmouth on the board.

St. Francis controlled the match, outshooting the Hawks, 30-12.  Erskine was stellar in goal for Monmouth, as he collected 12 saves, most on tough scoring chances.

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Long Island University in the season finale for the Hawks.  The match is set for 2 p.m.
