HAWKS DROP BATTLE FOR FIRST PLACE
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- Senior Steven Howard racked
up 37 points to lift the St. Francis College Terriers (10-7, 9-1 Northeast
Conference) to an 86-80 victory over the Monmouth University Hawks (10-7,
7-3) on Thursday evening at
the Pope Physical Education Center. The Terriers, who have now
won seven consecutive games, moved two games ahead of Monmouth as the leaders
of the Northeast Conference.
After bringing a 46-30 lead into the intermission, the Terriers opened a seemingly-safe 57-34 lead with 16:04 to play on a three-point play by junior Clifford Strong. However, Monmouth stormed back in the second half, closing to within 82-78 with 45 seconds remaining after consecutive three-point goals by Russ Anderson and Gerry Crosby. The Terriers sealed the win with four free throws down the stretch.
The Hawks took a 9-8 lead in the opening four minutes, but St. Francis responded by going on a 21-2 run, led by nine points by Howard, to open a 29-11 lead with 10:24 remaining in the half. The lead was stretched to 46-26 late in the half before the Hawks scored the last four points of the half.
Senior Richy Dominguez added 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while senior Heberth Reyes added 13 and Strong scored 11. Rahsaan Johnson tallied 24 points to lead the Hawks, while Crosby netted 23
