NEC Announces 2001-02 Basketball Television Schedule
18-Game Package Is Biggest In NEC History;
Cablevision To Produce First-Ever Women’s Basketball
Regular Season Package
Piscataway, NJ -- The Northeast Conference announced the most ambitious
basketball television schedule in league history today, an 18-game
package highlighted by 13 men’s games and five women’s games.
Madison Square Garden Network will serve as the flagship station for
NEC basketball for a sixth straight year. MSG will televise eight
regular
season men’s games and the NEC Women’s Championship game on March 9,
while sister station Fox Sports-New York will offer live coverage
of an NEC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal game on March 2.
The NEC will also provide coverage of games of regional interest on
Fox Sports-Pittsburgh and Comcast. Fox-Pittsburgh will air a pair
of
matchups between Robert Morris and St. Francis (PA) on January 15 and
February 19. A game to be broadcast on Comcast involving Mount
St. Mary’s has yet to be finalized.
For the 15th straight year, the men’s tournament championship game will
be broadcast by ESPN2 as part of its Championship Week. The NEC
final will emanate from the home of the highest remaining seed on Wednesday,
March 6 at 7:30 pm.
The NEC has also entered into a new venture with Cablevision to televise
two regular season women’s basketball doubleheaders. Fairleigh
Dickinson will host the first-ever NEC televised regular season doubleheader
on January 26. The Knights will take on Mount St. Mary’s, while
UMBC will be matched up with Long Island in the other contest.
The venue shifts to Sacred Heart on February 6, when the Pioneers meet
Wagner, while Long Island challenges Quinnipiac. The live broadcasts
will be available in approximately 3 million homes in New York, New
Jersey and Connecticut.
All three members of the NEC television staff return this season.
Dave Popkin, who serves as play-by-play announcer, is joined in the booth
by
former Wagner basketball coach Tim Capstraw, who handles color analyst
duties. Paul Dottino returns to provide additional in-game insights
as sideline reporter.
Jim Drucker serves as Executive Producer of NEC basketball telecasts,
while Eric Singer returns as Game Producer.
