MONMOUTH FIELD HOCKEY TALLIES 10TH WIN OF THE SEASON
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University field hockey squad reached the 10-win plateau for the first time in its brief four-year history as the Hawks won a 4-2 decision over Siena College in Northeast Conference action Sunday afternoon in Albany, N.Y.
Monmouth (10-8, 9-1 NEC) was led by sophomore Kellie Nurko. Nurko tallied a pair of goals and two assists in the contest.
Monmouth, the Northeast Conference regular-season champions, took control of the game early on as the NEC’s leading scorer Gina Chico registered a goal on assist from Nurko less than 10 minutes into the contest. With 15:06 left in the first half, Chico returned the favor by setting up Nurko’s first goal of the game to give the Hawks a 2-0 edge.
The Saints (5-9, 5-5 NEC) cut the lead in half two minutes later as Ashely Smaldin scored on an assist from Amy Prumo with 13:09 left in the opening stanza.
Nurko struck again, this time with an unassisted goal at with 9:03 left in the half, to give Monmouth a 3-1 lead. Senior Jennifer Marianni broke Siena’s spirit with goal on an assist from Nurko with 2:16 remaining in the first half to give the Hawks a 4-1 advantage at the intermission.
Siena’s Erin Mead scored an unassisted goal with 7:41 left in the game to cap off the scoring.
Monmouth controlled the tempo throughout much of the contest and held a 14-9 advantage in shots on goal and a 14-7 edge in penalty corners.
Senior Jamie Urbanowicz made five saves in goal to earn the victory for the Hawks.
Monmouth completes its regular-season slate on Tuesday as the Hawks
travel to Philadelphia, Pa., for a 3:30 p.m. contest at LaSalle. Monmouth
hosts the 2000 Northeast Conference Tournament next weekend. The Hawks
are scheduled to play in the first semifinal game at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday,
October 28. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday, October 29 at
3:00 p.m.
