HAWK FIELD HOCKEY FALLS TO VILLANOVA
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University’s field hockey team suffered its first shutout of the season as it dropped a 3-0 decision to Villanova University Tuesday afternoon at the MU Field Hockey Park in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
The Wildcats (6-4, 0-2 Big East) took control of the contest early as Kristen Strocen (Philadelphia, Pa./Northeast) scored an unassisted goal 6:58 into the contest. Villanova kept the momentum on its side heading into halftime as Stephanie Vrettos (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) scored on an assist from Brooke Bergmann (Fallsington, Pa./Pennsbury) after the Wildcat’s initial scoring chance off a penalty corner was denied. Villanova went into halftime with a 2-0 edge.
Villanova registered its final goal just 2:39 into the second half as Nicole DiMaggio (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) scored on an assist from Leah Lisausky (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsbury).
Meghan Helwig (Basking Ridge, N.J./Madison) recorded the shutout for the Wildcats with five saves in the game.
Jamie Urbanowicz (Atlantic Highlands/Middletown South) played all 70 minutes in goal for the Hawks and registered eight saves.
Monmouth has a pair of key home dates this weekend as the Hawks host Sacred Heart University Saturday at 1 p.m. The Pioneers handed the Hawks their only conference loss of the season on September 24. Monmouth welcomes Quinnipiac University to town on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game. The Braves are the defending Northeast Conference champions and trail first-place Monmouth in the standings by a half game.
