MONMOUTH FIELD HOCKEY RECORDS SECOND CONSECUTIVE SHUTOUT
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University’s field hockey team recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1999 as the Hawks posted a 4-0 victory over UMBC at the MU Field Hockey Park on Sunday afternoon.
Kristen Hulmes led Monmouth (5-4, 4-2 Northeast Conference) to the victory with her first career hat trick. Brittany Kershaw recorded the shutout, the second of the season for the freshman. Monmouth blanked St. Francis (Pa.) 3-0 on Saturday.
Monmouth drew first blood 6:39 into the contest as Tara Hartman tallied an unassisted goal to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Kristen Hulmes tallied her first goal 20 minutes later as she scored
on an assist from Gina Chico with 8:13 left in the first half.
Hulmes added a pair of goals in the second half on assists from Katie
Niemczyk and Kristen Haberthur.
Monmouth outshot UMBC (1-6, 1-4 NEC) 19-6 in the contest.
Kershaw made two saves in goal for the Hawks. UMBC’s Karalyn Krieger made 10 saves in the losing effort.
Monmouth returns to action on Wednesday, October 3 as the Hawks travel to Lawrenceville, N.J., for a 4 p.m. contest vs. Rider.
