HAWK FIELD HOCKEY TALLIES 3-0 VICTORY AT UMBC
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Monmouth University’s Gina Chico (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) extended her points lead in the Northeast Conference with a goal on Saturday in her team’s 3-0 victory over the University of Maryland-Baltimore. Chico now has 11 goals on the season and a league-high, 23 points.
Chico scored her goal at the 24:40 mark of the second half following a Retriever turnover deep in their own defensive zone. Sophomore Deana DeGregorio (Wall, N.J./Wall) controlled the ball following the turnover and fed Chico, ranked 16th in the nation in scoring, inside the circle. Chico placed the shot into the lower lefthand side of the goal, beating both a defender and the goal to give Monmouth (6-6, 5-1 NEC) a 1-0 edge.
Monmouth’s defense recorded the shutout and allowed just one shot to be taken by the Retrievers (0-6, 0-5 NEC) for the entire game. After a scoreless first half, Kristen Haberthur (Newton, N.J./Newton) fed Julie Dutton (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) for her first goal of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead with 28:05 left in the game. Ten minutes after Chico’s goal, Megan Kenney (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored on a penalty stroke opportunity to close the books on the scoring and give MU a 3-0 advantage.
Monmouth returns to action Tuesday when they host Villanova University at 3:30 p.m. at the MU Field Hockey Park.
