NURKO’S TWO GOALS IN 26 SECONDS LIFTS HAWKS
West Long Branch, N.J. – Kellie Nurko (Robbinsville, N.J./Allentown) scored two goals 26 seconds apart in the second half to lift Monmouth University to a victory over St. Francis (Pa.), 3-0 at the MU Field Hockey Park. The win improves the Hawks’ record to 4-4, 3-2 in the NEC, while the first-year Red Flash fall to 0-7, 0-4 in the NEC.
Monmouth totaled seven shots on goal in the first half, forcing the St. Francis netminder, Erin Hobbs to make three saves. The Red Flash were held without a shot in the first stanza.
The Hawks got on the board first as Nurko scored an unassisted goal with 22:07 remaining in the game. After the center ball was stolen from St. Francis, Nurko raced down the field and posted another tally, 26 seconds later.
Monmouth put the game away with 9:15 remaining as Katie Niemczyk (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) received a Courtney Richardson (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) pass and slid it passed Hobbs.
The Hawks fired 15 shots on goal in the second half, while the Red Flash managed one. Hobbs made nine saves on the 15 Monmouth shots and totaled 12 on the day.
Monmouth returns to action tomorrow afternoon as they host UMBC in a
1 p.m. match in West Long Branch.
