LAFAYETTE SLIPS BY HAWKS IN 2-1 DECISION

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University field hockey team played Lafayette College on an even keel for the first 62 minutes before yielding the game-winner with 7:22 left as the Leopards registered a 2-1 victory over the Hawks in Easton, Pa., on Wednesday.

After a scoreless first half, the Leopards struck first with a goal by Megan Monahan 4:22 into the second half. Monahan’s goal came on a penalty corner opportunity. She was assisted by Kelly Maiers and Carolyn Rodichak.

Kellie Nurko (Robbinsville, N.J./Allentown) tallied the equalizer for Monmouth (5-6, 4-1 NEC) with 24:25 left in the contest to even the score at 1-1.  The goal unassisted for Nurko.

The game appeared to be headed into overtime, but with 7:22 left on the clock, the Leopards were awarded a penalty stroke opportunity and Lafayette’s Jennifer Stone capitalized for the difference maker.

Hawks’ goalie Jamie Urbanowicz (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Middletown North) played well in goal for Monmouth. She registered 13 saves despite being credited with the loss.

Monmouth will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday as it travels to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County for a 1 p.m. contest.
