MONMOUTH FIELD HOCKEY RECORDS OVERTIME VICTORY OVER SACRED HEART

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth University field hockey squad used an overtime, penalty-corner goal from Gina Chico to notch its second consecutive victory as the Hawks clipped Sacred Heart University, 2-1, in Fairfield, Conn., on Tuesday afternoon.

Monmouth (3-3, 2-1 Northeast Conference) and Sacred Heart went scoreless for nearly 65 minutes, before the Pioneers’ Christine Bobe broke the seal with an unassisted goal with 5:11 remaining in regulation.

It did not take long for the Hawks to produce an equalizer as Janet Gallo followed with a goal of her own on an assist from Megan Kenney to knot the score at 1-1 with 4:13 left in the second half.

Chico notched the walk-off goal nearly six minutes into the 7-on-7 overtime period. On the penalty corner, Kristin Haberthur provided a perfect insert pass to the stick stop Kelly Monahan who in turn set up the game-winner as Chico unleashed a fury past the Pioneer defense.

Freshman goaltender Brittany Kershaw went the distance in goal for the Hawks recording seven saves on the afternoon. The Pioneers Roby Breer made 13 saves.

Monmouth returns to action on Thursday as the Hawks travel to Hamden, Conn., for a 3:30 p.m. contest at Quinnipiac University.
