MONMOUTH FIELD HOCKEY KNOCKS OFF DEFENDING CONFERENCE CHAMPION

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Monmouth Uuiversity field hockey team knocked off the reigning Northeast Conference champion Quinnipiac, 2-1, in double overtime Saturday in Hamden, Connecticut.

Gina Chico (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) scored the decisive goal 3:36 into the second sudden-death overtime to give Monmouth (5-4, 4-0 NEC) the victory. The Hawks have a winning-record nine games into the season for the first time since the program began four years ago and the Hawks have sole possession of first place in the league.

After a scoreless first half, Quinnipiac (2-5, 0-2 NEC) scored first as Julie Champagne tallied a goal on an assist from Britney Ewan with 16:35 left in regulation.

Monmouth wasted no time in registering the equalizer as Kellie Nurko (Robbinsville, N.J./Allentown) put the ball into the back of the net on a pass from Deana DeGregorio (Wall, N.J./Wall) less than four minutes later to tie the score at 1-1.

Monmouth goalkeeper Jamie Urbanowicz (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Middletown South) had her best game of the season in goal as she made 21 saves, including several of the spectacular variety. The Hawks posted the victory despite being outshot 24-9 by the Braves.

Monmouth returns to action Sunday as they travel to Fairfield, Conn., for a match vs. Sacred Heart.
