MONMOUTH OFFENSE EXPLODES IN VICTORY OVER UMBC

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Senior Marie Uzzo (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham) tallied a hat trick as Monmouth defeated the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in Northeast Conference field hockey action Sunday in West Long Branch, N.J.

Uzzo scored the first of her school-record tying three goals with just 2:10 left in the first half to give Monmouth (3-4, 2-0 Northeast Conference) a 1-0 lead at the intermission.

Uzzo’s goal awakened a slumbering Hawks’ offense that would explode for five goals in the second half. Uzzo added the second goal 42 seconds into the second half and added her third goal five minutes later to give Monmouth a 3-0 lead with 29:23 remaining.

Junior Kristin Haberthur (Newton, N.J./Newton) pushed the lead to 4-0 with an unassisted goal with 23:32 remaining in the contest.

Sophomore Gina Chico (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) added to her league-leading total for goals and points as she drove home a penalty corner opportunity with 18:10 remaining in the game to give Monmouth a 5-0 lead. The tally moved her season tally to 7 goals and 15 points. Leanne Wright, the inserter, and Maggie Bomenblit, the stick stop, each got an assist on the play.

With 15:37 left in the game, the Hawks capitalized on another penalty corner chance as Megan Kenney (Stockton, N.J./Hunterdon Central) scored on assists from Wright and Bomenblit to close the book on the scoring for the afternoon.

Monmouth peppered the goal with 24 shots to just three for UMBC. The Hawks also owned an 18-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Hawks’ six goals marked the highest offensive output for Monmouth in a Northeast Conference game. Uzzo’s three goals tied her with Magda Gonzalez for the single-game record.

Monmouth returns to action Wednesday when they host Rider for a 4 p.m. contest at the MU Field Hockey Park.
