LAST-MINUTE GOAL SPARKS HAWKS TO VICTORY OVER SIENA
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Sophomore Gina Chico (Williamstown, N.J./Williamstown) scored a game-winning goal with 33.6 seconds left in the game as Monmouth University defeated Siena College, 2-1, in Northeast Conference field hockey action Saturday in West Long Branch, N.J.
Chico, who leads the Northeast Conference in scoring with six goals and 13 points, weaved through several defenders before beating Siena’s goalkeeper stickside.
The two squads played to a scoreless draw threw the first 64 minutes before Megan Kenney (Stockton, N.J/Hunterdon Central) capitalized on a penalty stroke opportunity and beat the Saints’ goalie to the right side to give Monmouth (2-4, 1-0 NEC) a 1-0 edge with 6:18 left in the contest.
Siena wasted no time in scoring the equalizer. With 4:18 left in the contest, Amy Pruno scored on an assist by Erin Mead to even the score at 1-1.
Monmouth peppered the goal with 16 shots to just four for Siena, but the Hawks did not score until shots No. 15 and 16. The Hawks also owned a 15-6 edge in penalty corner opportunities.
Monmouth returns to action Sunday when they host UMBC at Noon at the MU Field Hockey Park.
