HAWKS FALL IN CONFERENCE OPENER
 

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.  – Monmouth University’s women’s field hockey squad dropped a 3-0 decision to Quinnipiac University in the Hawks’ Northeast Conference opener at the MU Field Hockey Park in West Long Branch, N.J.

After both teams went scoreless for nearly 20 minutes, Quinnipiac (1-2, 1-1 NEC) broke the seal with an unassisted goal by Julie Smith with 15:50 remaining in the first half.

The two teams kept on an even keel for the next 35 minutes, before Smith added her second goal of the contest. The Braves put the contest away with 10:52 remaining in the game as Courtney Ryan tallied an unassisted goal.

Sarah Mather went the distance in goal for Quinnipiac, making six saves to earn her first shutout of the season. Freshmen Carrie Colbert and Brittany Kershaw each played one half for the Monmouth (1-2, 0-1 NEC).

Monmouth returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 9 as the Hawks host Bucknell in a 1 p.m. contest.
