MONMOUTH FIELD HOCKEY NOTCHES VICTORY OVER LEHIGH

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J.  – Monmouth University’s women’s field hockey squad tallied a 2-1 overtime victory over Lehigh University of the Patriot League Tuesday evening in Bethlehem, Pa.

Monmouth (1-1) took an early lead in the contest as 2000 Northeast Conference Player of the Year Gina Chico registered a goal on a penalty stroke just 6:51 into the contest. The Hawks kept the advantage throughout the first half.

Lehigh (0-3) evened the contest as Michelle Wildgen scored on an assist from Jane Knowles 2:21 into the second half. The two squads played on an even keel for the remainder of regulation, forcing the first overtime of the season for both squads.

The sudden death overtime took just over one and one-half minutes as Kristin Haberthur scored on an assist from Kellie Nurko at the 1:34 mark to give Monmouth the victory.

Monmouth goaltender Brittany Kershaw posted an outstanding performance in goal. She made eight saves in the contest to help the Hawks overcome a 17-10 shooting advantage in favor over Lehigh.

The win snapped a four-game series losing streak for the Hawks against Lehigh. Monmouth had lost each of its four prior contest vs. the Mountain Hawks, including three consecutive one-goal losses.

Monmouth returns to action on Friday, Sept. 7 as the Hawks host Northeast Conference rival Quinnipiac University in a 4 p.m. contest at the MU Field Hockey Park.
