General Advising for MAT Candidates:
Monmouth University - Curriculum and Instruction Department

There are 2 (two) MAT degree programs.

The Master of Arts in Teaching, Initial Certification ("non-certified" is the official title) which is the degree you need if you are pursuing a first time teaching license in one of the certification areas offered in New Jersey.

The Master of Arts in Teaching, Advanced ("elementary education advanced" is the official title of this program) which is the degree you are pursuing if you are either 1) an already certified teacher with a BA or BS degree and want to receive a Masters degree in a professional growth area, or 2) you want to further your study of education as a discipline and do not want to receive certification.

Elective Courses:

Elective courses are designed into the program to allow each candidate to explore and strengthen various academic areas related to your professional teaching goals.

In general, those seeking professional experience in an elementary classroom need to consider taking courses, which could strengthen the content knowledge areas (math, science, and social studies), and/or courses that are about the education of young children or adolescents.

Those who seek certification in a content area (secondary / high school teaching) such as math, one of the sciences, history, or language, should explore courses which further strengthen the teaching of the content area. Presently, there are few courses which fit this description at Monmouth but the list is growing.

Recommended elective courses are provided on the list below, divided by degree program and what type of professional experience you are pursuing.

Recommended Elective Courses: (list under construction)
