Abstract: Bertrand Russell: The Ghost of Madness,
the second half of Ray Monk's monumental biography of Russell, has
not been available
for long. Indeed, it has only just become available in the United States
in March of this year. And yet already it has generated lively (often heated)
debate about almost every part of Russell's life and thought. Monk's treatment
of Russell, moreover, has received just as much attention, both good and
bad. This panel seeks to provide a forum for discussion of this monumental
work within the BRS. Each panelist will provide a brief commentary on one
aspect of Monk's work. Timothy Madigan will consider Monk's treatment of
Russell's later work in formal philosophy. Peter Stone will examine Monk's
approach to Russell's political theory and social activism. Warren Allen
Smith will discuss Monk's searing exploration of Russell's personal life.
And Peter Friedman will conclude with an evaluation of Monk as a biographer.
The panel will then provide a chance for responses from individual panelists
to the various points raised and for discussion from the floor.
