Schedule
Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching), sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), is a program to introduce new or recent Ph.D.s in the mathematical sciences to the broad range of roles that face a new faculty member, especially improving the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics.

The most recent set of NJ-NExT workshops began in the fall of 2007.  The next set of workshops are expected to begin in the fall of 2010 or 2011.  The information below concerns the fall, 2007 workshops, but will be similar (except location) for future groups.  However, there are two new NJ-NExT co-directors, John Saccoman (saccomjt@shu.edu) of Seton Hall University, and Kaaren Finberg (baltin@optonline.net) of Ocean County College.

The New Jersey Section of the MAA conducts a local version of NExT (NJ-NExT), run on a smaller scale but having the same goals. It is open to full-time faculty in mathematics departments in the Section who are within their first four years of full-time teaching in New Jersey. The first event for the program Fellows will be a workshop in conjunction with the MAA-NJ section meeting at St. Peter's College in Jersey City on November 3, 2007.  The workshop will take place the Friday afternoon and evening (November 2) preceeding the section meeting, will continue with fellows attending the section meeting on Saturday, and will conclude with a final workshop session and dinner with mentors after the section meeting.  At this workshop, Fellows will explore and discuss issues of special relevance to beginning faculty, such as:

The Fellows will also have an opportunity to meet and interact with some of the national NExT Fellows from the New Jersey Section.

        After the workshop, during the following year, Fellows will participate in:

COSTS:  Approximately twenty-five NJ-NExT Fellows will be selected for the coming year.  The costs of the workshop will be provided by the New Jersey section of the MAA.  Institutions employing the NJ-NExT Fellows are expected to provide financial assistance in the form of mileage reimbursement, meeting dues, motel room and meals for the workshop this fall, and mileage and lunch for the section meetings next spring and fall.

We seek a diverse group of participants from a wide range of institutions. Your interest in the teaching and learning of undergraduate mathematics, and the opportunity to implement changes in your own classroom, are important considerations.

On a separate sheet, please tell us about yourself.  We are especially interested in:

        *  Your personal approach to teaching and learning, including any relevant experiences;
        *  What you would like to get out of your participation in NJ-NExT.

Please include a description of any teaching positions that you have held since receiving your last degree.

Each applicant is encouraged to have the support of the department in which he/she is working.  Most deans feel the
expense of a section NExT is a worthwhile investment in their faculty's teaching. Please ask your chair or dean to write a
statement of support, indicating the amount of financial support the department can guarantee.
